The much-anticipated Onam festivities are being overshadowed by travel woes for Malayalis, particularly those residing in Bengaluru. The suspension of the Ernakulam-Bengaluru Vande Bharat train service has left passengers in a predicament, forcing them to seek costly alternatives.
The Vande Bharat, a popular choice for its speed and comfort, was operational until August 26th. However, despite preparations for its resumption, the train remains idle at Ernakulam South railway station. The suspension, coming just weeks before Onam, has sparked widespread frustration among passengers who were relying on this convenient travel option.
The abrupt cessation of the Vande Bharat service has led to a surge in bus ticket prices on the Bengaluru-Ernakulam route, with further increases anticipated as the festive season approaches. With limited train options available and most tickets on waiting lists, travelers are facing a bleak situation.
MP Hibi Eden has called for an inquiry into the sudden suspension of the profitable Vande Bharat service, questioning the authorities’ delay in resuming operations. He has also urged the introduction of special trains to accommodate the surge in travelers.
The National Kerala Congress state chairman, Kuruvila Mathews, has echoed the calls for the permanent establishment of the Ernakulam-Bengaluru Vande Bharat service, recommending an increase in the number of coaches to address the growing demand.
The Onam season highlights the urgent need for efficient and reliable transportation services. The railway authorities’ lack of proactive measures has left passengers frustrated and without viable options. Restoring the Vande Bharat service and enhancing rail connectivity would provide much-needed relief, ensuring that more travelers can reach their homes comfortably and affordably during this festive time.
