Pilgrims Trekking Vellingiri Hills for Chithra Pounami Receive Advisories from Forest Department
The Forest Department has released guidelines for pilgrims undertaking the Vellingiri hills trek during the Chithra Pounami festival. Pilgrims are urged to adhere to the designated trekking paths and refrain from using alternative routes. They are also reminded to avoid carrying single-use plastics and plastic wrappers.
Pilgrims may bring water bottles to the hills by paying a refundable fee of ₹20 per bottle. However, inflammable materials, cigarettes, beedis, lighters, and matches are strictly prohibited. Additionally, pilgrims are not permitted to discard used clothes after bathing in the Andisunai stream, as it violates the Tamil Nadu Forest Act, 1882.
The Department emphasizes the importance of not feeding or disturbing wildlife during the trek. Pilgrims are encouraged to trek in groups for safety reasons. Those who have undergone intensive COVID-19 care or have pre-existing health conditions such as heart ailments, high blood pressure, breathing problems, obesity, or diabetes are advised to seek medical clearance before embarking on the trek.
Bringing pilgrims who develop health complications or pass away during the trek downhill is arduous, as they must be carried on bamboo stretchers through challenging terrain.
