Venice, the iconic city of canals and bridges, is set to broaden its tourist entry fee system starting in 2025. This move, aimed at tackling overtourism, will have significant implications for travelers planning to visit the lagoon city.
Initially introduced in April 2024 with a €5 charge for day-trippers on particularly crowded days, the new system will now extend to 54 days between April and July, nearly double the previous 29 days. The goal of this fee remains the same: to manage the overwhelming number of visitors and control the flow during peak times.
For travelers, this expansion means careful planning will be more crucial than ever. Those who book their trip ahead of time will still pay €5, but for last-minute arrivals within four days of their trip, the fee will rise to €10. However, tourists with hotel or guesthouse reservations will continue to be exempt from the entry charge.
While the system is still in its experimental phase, Venice is leading the global conversation on how to manage overtourism effectively. City officials, including Simone Venturini, emphasize the proactive approach behind this expansion, aiming to spread out the flow of visitors rather than deter them entirely.
Venice’s initiative has already garnered attention from other global destinations facing similar tourism challenges, like Kyoto, Japan, and Formentera, Spain. However, critics argue that the fee hasn’t yet significantly reduced visitor numbers. Despite these concerns, Venice’s mayor, Luigi Brugnaro, insists it’s too early to judge the system’s effectiveness.
