Verdagy Opens First DOE-Supported Electrolyzer Manufacturing Facility in the US

Verdagy, a frontrunner in the green hydrogen electrolysis sector, has achieved a major milestone with the grand opening of the inaugural Department of Energy (DOE)-supported electrolyzer manufacturing facility in the United States. Situated in Newark, California, this cutting-edge facility boasts over 100,000 square feet of manufacturing space, capable of producing several gigawatts of electrolyzers. This significant development marks a pivotal step towards advancing the production of green hydrogen in the US.

The new Silicon Valley factory is a testament to Verdagy’s commitment to scaling green hydrogen production. Drawing on their extensive experience in utility-scale solar and automotive battery manufacturing, Verdagy has designed a facility that prioritizes efficiency and scalability from the outset. This approach has led to the development of a unique “Coils-to-Cells” manufacturing process in partnership with ATI, Inc., a key supplier of US metal alloys.

Verdagy’s manufacturing strategy centers around reducing electrolyzer stack costs through advanced automation, a cost-effective product design, and the integration of domestic nickel alloy into a high-volume automated production line. This approach allows Verdagy to achieve production costs that are five times lower than their competitors, enabling them to scale capacity rapidly and cost-effectively. Their nimbleness and flexibility also allow them to adapt quickly to market changes, unburdened by the constraints of established businesses.

The “Coils-to-Cells” manufacturing system aligns perfectly with the DOE’s vision for domestic electrolyzer manufacturing, fostering a robust domestic metals supply chain and stimulating further growth in domestic production. The facility’s impressive production capabilities will also create new clean tech jobs within the local community.

Verdagy’s gigawatt-scale factory was announced in 2023 and received a $39.6M grant from the DOE in March 2024 to expedite the high-volume manufacturing of Advanced Alkaline Water Electrolysis (AWE) eDynamic® electrolyzers. Full-scale production is scheduled to commence in the first quarter of 2025, marking a significant leap forward in the US’s green hydrogen manufacturing capabilities.
