Max Verstappen has reflected on his intense rivalry with Lewis Hamilton during the 2021 Formula 1 season, recognizing the Briton as his greatest rival. “Of course, we had a big rivalry in 2021, but ultimately we do have a lot of respect for each other,” Verstappen said. “He is definitely up there as one of the greatest drivers ever.” Despite the fierce competition and occasional controversies during their championship battle, Verstappen acknowledged Hamilton’s remarkable consistency and ability to deliver under pressure. “Consistency is his key, and staying on top of his game. The way he has managed his championships is very impressive. He has stood up when he needed to and made the difference.”
Verstappen’s high praise for Hamilton marks a significant shift from their earlier rivalry. As the competition has subsided, so has the animosity between the two drivers. Similarly, Hamilton has expressed admiration for Verstappen’s exceptional driving skills and dominance in F1 over the past few seasons.
In a recent interview, Hamilton indicated that he would not be surprised if Verstappen were considered to replace him at Mercedes in the future. “I wouldn’t say I am surprised that he (Verstappen) is being considered,” Hamilton said. “He is a great driver. If you run a team, you want the best driver and a driver that brings in the eyeballs and brings in the sponsorship and he is one of those.”
