The much-anticipated Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan starrer, *Vettaiyan*, continues to dominate the box office, but the film’s earnings have taken a dip since day five of its release. While the film has performed exceptionally well in its first seven days, raking in a net total of ₹ 118.95 crore, it is facing stiff competition and a slowdown in the pace of its box office performance.
According to industry tracker Sacnilk.com, *Vettaiyan* earned a net income of ₹ 3.15 crore on day eight. The action thriller registered an overall 16.79 per cent Tamil occupancy as of Day 8. However, while the film’s initial momentum propelled it to a massive ₹ 49.05 crore over its first weekend (releasing on Thursday, October 10), the post-weekend numbers seem to have been affected by the competition from other films and audience fatigue.
Interestingly, the film’s performance varies across different regions. Pondicherry stands out with the highest occupancy of 28.25 per cent, followed by Kochi and Trichy with 24.25 per cent and 27.75 per cent respectively. In the metros, Mumbai’s occupancy stands at a comparatively lower 11 per cent, trailing behind Bangalore and Chennai.
Directed by TJ Gnanavel of *Jai Bhim* fame, *Vettaiyan* tells the story of an encounter specialist who faces numerous challenges while investigating an educational scam. The film features a star-studded cast, including Rajinikanth, Amitabh Bachchan, Fahadh Faasil, Rana Daggubati, and Dushara Vijayan. The film has also attracted significant attention for bringing Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan back together on the big screen after 33 years. Their previous collaborations, *Andhaa Kaanoon* (1983) and *Geraftaar* (1985), saw Rajinikanth in cameo appearances or supporting roles. In *Vettaiyan*, cinema buffs finally have the opportunity to see both legends share significant screen time.
While *Vettaiyan* is currently battling a decline in its box office performance, the film’s potential to reach the ₹ 300 crore milestone remains a possibility. With the star power of its lead actors and the film’s intriguing storyline, the coming weeks will reveal whether *Vettaiyan* can hold its ground and continue to draw audiences to theaters.
