Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Monday voiced his concern over recent comments made by the Supreme Court regarding the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Speaking at an event in Mumbai, Dhankhar stated that such observations could potentially “dispirit” the investigative agency. He underscored the paramount importance of safeguarding the integrity and independence of institutions like the CBI, Election Commission, and other investigative agencies.
Dhankhar emphasized that these bodies play a crucial role in upholding the rule of law and ensuring a functioning democracy. He asserted that they operate under “tight situations” and that public commentary can negatively impact their morale and effectiveness.
The Vice President’s remarks followed a statement made by a Supreme Court judge on Friday, who described the CBI as a “caged parrot” and questioned the justification for arresting Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the excise policy case.
Dhankhar stressed the need for a unified approach to strengthen democratic values and uphold constitutional ideals. He urged all branches of government – the Legislature, Executive, and Judiciary – to work in tandem to avoid political inflammatory debates that could undermine the nation’s institutions. He emphasized that these institutions are robust and function independently under the rule of law, with appropriate checks and balances in place.
Kejriwal, who was released on bail on Friday, announced his intention to resign from his post and call for early elections. He is scheduled to meet with Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena on Tuesday to formally tender his resignation.
