New Clean Energy RNG Facility Opens in South Dakota
Clean Energy Fuels Corp. has announced the completion of its latest renewable natural gas (RNG) facility at Victory Farms Dairy in Revillo, South Dakota. The facility, which utilizes manure from 6,000 dairy cows, has begun injecting pipeline-quality RNG into the interstate natural gas infrastructure.
The two-digester facility at Victory Farms processes approximately 120,000 gallons of manure daily, producing an estimated 900,000 gallons of carbon-negative RNG annually. This ultra-clean RNG will be distributed to Clean Energy’s fueling network, providing commercial fleets with a readily available solution to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions significantly.
Clean Energy currently operates over 600 stations across North America, serving customers such as UPS, Amazon, and dozens of waste companies. This new RNG facility is part of Clean Energy’s commitment to decarbonizing heavy-duty transportation while simultaneously providing dairy owners with an additional revenue stream and assisting with waste management.
The construction of the RNG facility, including the manure collection facility, digesters, and processing plant, totaled approximately $26 million. Clean Energy is currently filing applications to generate federal and state environmental credits.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, agriculture accounts for nearly 10% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, while the transportation sector accounts for another 28%. Capturing methane from farm waste, as done at Victory Farms, helps to reduce these emissions. RNG, produced from captured methane and used as a transportation fuel, significantly lowers greenhouse gas emissions on a lifecycle basis compared to diesel. This makes RNG one of the only fuels to receive a negative carbon-intensity score based on emission reductions at the source and the vehicle.
About Clean Energy
Clean Energy Fuels Corp. is the country’s leading provider of the cleanest fuel for the transportation market. Its mission is to decarbonize transportation through the development and delivery of RNG, a sustainable fuel derived from organic waste. Clean Energy’s network of fueling stations and RNG production facilities at dairy farms empowers thousands of vehicles, including airport shuttles, city buses, waste trucks, and heavy-duty trucks, to reduce their climate-harming greenhouse gas emissions.
