Vietnam Tourism Booms: August Sees 17.7% Surge in International Arrivals

Vietnam’s tourism industry witnessed a remarkable resurgence in August 2024, with international visitor numbers reaching 1.43 million, representing a substantial 17.7% increase compared to the same period last year. This surge in tourism is a testament to the nation’s efforts in promoting itself as a compelling travel destination.

The General Statistics Office of Vietnam reported that over the first eight months of 2024, Vietnam attracted a total of 11.4 million international tourists, showcasing a significant 45.8% rise from the previous year. This figure also surpasses the same period in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic, by a noteworthy 1%.

The Asian market remains the primary source of Vietnam’s international visitors, accounting for over 9 million arrivals, representing a remarkable 51% year-on-year increase. Notably, Europe and Oceania also saw substantial growth, with visitor numbers increasing by 42.7% and 25.4%, respectively. Europe contributed over 1.3 million visitors, while Oceania contributed 346,500. The American market experienced more moderate growth, with a 7.8% increase to 674,300 visitors. However, the most significant surge was observed in the African market, with an astonishing 95.5% year-on-year increase, reaching 34,200 tourists.

Out of the 11.4 million international visitors, air travel dominated, with 9.7 million passengers, accounting for 84.7% of the total and marking a 41% year-on-year increase. Land travel contributed 13.8% of arrivals, with 1.6 million visitors and a 73.3% rise. Sea travel accounted for 1.5% of the total, with 165,600 visitors, representing a 2.8-fold increase compared to the previous year.

A spokesperson from the General Statistics Office attributed the growth in international arrivals to a combination of factors, including favorable visa policies, enhanced tourism promotion efforts, and Vietnam’s increasing reputation as a desirable travel destination. These factors have collectively contributed to a thriving tourism sector in Vietnam.
