Vietnam is embarking on an ambitious project to build a high-speed railway spanning 1,541 kilometers, connecting Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. This $67.34 billion project, funded entirely by the Vietnamese government, will revolutionize transportation in the country, with trains capable of reaching speeds of 350 km/h, reducing the journey between the two cities from 30 hours to just under 6 hours.
According to Deputy Minister of Transport Nguyen Dan Huy, the railway will boost Vietnam’s economic development and improve logistics efficiency. The project, which is expected to begin construction in 2028 and be completed by 2035, will be financed through medium-term public investments, with an annual allocation of $5.6 billion. The new rail line will have five depots for passenger trains and four depots for freight trains, ensuring smooth operations.
This high-speed train project could also connect to China’s rail network, enhancing cross-border trade and tourism. The project will create thousands of jobs, support environmental sustainability by reducing carbon emissions, and contribute to Vietnam’s goal of balanced regional development.
