Vijay Sethupathi’s milestone 50th film, ‘Maharaja,’ is now available for streaming on Netflix. This action-packed thriller, which hit theaters on June 14th, has made a significant impact at the box office, becoming the third biggest opening of the year in Tamil Nadu and grossing over ₹107 crore. It has also achieved the distinction of being the highest-grossing Tamil film in India in 2024.
The film’s arrival on Netflix was announced on Friday, July 12th, with the streaming platform sharing the poster on social media and writing, “Lakshmi” kaanama ponadhum, Maharaja oda vaazhka thalaikeela ayiduchu. ‘Maharaja’ tells the story of a barber named Maharaja who is seeking revenge after his wife dies in an accident and his young daughter, Jyothi, is physically and sexually assaulted by gangsters. Seeking justice from the police proves futile, leading Maharaja to take matters into his own hands. The film’s central theme revolves around this quest for revenge.
Directed by Nithilan Swaminathan and produced by Passion Studios and The Route, the film features a stellar cast including Vijay Sethupathi, Anurag Kashyap, Abhirami, and Mamta Mohandas.
Film trade analyst Ramesh Bala, in a social media post, highlighted the film’s impressive box office performance, stating that ‘Maharaja’ would be a record-breaking film wherever it went. He further noted that it had become the highest-grossing Tamil movie in the USA for 2024, crossing the 1 million mark at the Box Office in Malaysia and the Gulf.
