Villagers Face Charges for Boycotting Lok Sabha Election in Kancheepuram

In a turn of events, the Sunguvarchatram police in Kancheepuram district have filed a case against 10 villagers of Ekanapuram for preventing officers from performing their official duties. This follows the villagers’ decision to boycott the Lok Sabha election as a form of protest against the State government’s proposal to build a second airport in Parandur.

Out of the 1,400 registered voters in Ekanapuram, only 21 government staff exercised their franchise, claiming that the government had ignored their concerns for over 600 days. On polling day, villagers of Ekanapuram and Napattu continued their agitation, leading to heated arguments with the local Tahsildar, Mr. Sundaramurthy. Despite his attempts to persuade them to vote, the villagers refused, prompting the filing of a case against them.

In response to a complaint from the Tahsildar, the police summoned the named villagers to the police station for an inquiry on Monday, accompanied by their fellow villagers.
