Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has etched her name in history as the first Indian woman to reach an Olympic wrestling final. Competing in the women’s 50kg freestyle category at the Paris Olympics 2024, Phogat secured her spot in the gold medal match, a remarkable achievement that highlights her resilience and dedication.
Phogat’s journey to the final was a testament to her unwavering spirit. She began her campaign with a stunning upset victory over the reigning Olympic champion and world No. 1, Yui Susaki of Japan. This triumph, a 3-2 win, not only ended Susaki’s 83-bout unbeaten streak but also set the stage for Phogat’s dominance throughout the tournament. Following her opening victory, Phogat continued her impressive run, defeating 2018 European champion Oksana Livach of Ukraine in the quarterfinals. She then secured her spot in the final with a tactical 5-0 win over Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez in the semifinals.
Phogat’s performance marks a remarkable comeback. Since her disappointing quarterfinal loss at the Tokyo Olympics, she has faced numerous challenges, including a controversial dispute with the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) that led her to consider retirement. According to fellow Indian wrestler Bajrang Punia, Phogat’s drive stems from a desire to create a better environment for future wrestlers. In an interview with ESPN, Punia quoted Phogat as saying, “I am fighting for the future generation of wrestlers. Not for myself, my career is done and this is my last Olympics. I want to fight for the young women wrestlers who will come and fight for them so that they can wrestle safely. That’s why I was in Jantar Mantar, and that’s why I am here.”
Phogat’s journey to the final has been unconventional. After failing to secure a spot in her usual 53kg category, she dropped down to the 50kg class to qualify for her third consecutive Olympics. The gold medal match, scheduled for Wednesday, will pit Phogat against American Sarah Ann Hildebrandt.
