Vinesh Phogat Returns to Hero’s Welcome After Disqualification at Paris Olympics

Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat returned to a hero’s welcome in the national capital on Saturday, despite her controversial disqualification in the final of the women’s 50kg freestyle wrestling event at the Paris Olympics. The wrestler was accompanied by fellow wrestlers Bajrang Punia and Sakshee Malikkh, and Congress MP Deepender Singh Hooda, who joined her on a roadshow through the city.

Phogat’s journey to the final was marked by triumph in the semi-finals, but she was ultimately disqualified for exceeding the weight limit by a mere 100 grams. Despite the disqualification, Phogat received a warm welcome upon her arrival at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, where she was visibly emotional. The reception highlighted the public’s appreciation for her incredible performance at the Olympics.

Congress MP Deepender Hooda expressed the nation’s pride in Phogat, stating, “People are encouraging her (Vinesh Phogat) and the whole country is proud of its daughter…” Fellow wrestler Sakshee Malikkh emphasized Phogat’s impact on women in sports, calling her a “Champion” and emphasizing the importance of her achievements. Bajrang Punia echoed this sentiment, commending Phogat’s journey from the streets to the Olympic podium, expressing gratitude to the nation for their support.

Phogat herself expressed her appreciation for the warm welcome, stating, “I thank all the countrymen, I am very fortunate.” Notably, Phogat became the first Indian woman wrestler to reach an Olympic final.

However, the jubilant return was overshadowed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s (CAS) dismissal of her petition to be awarded a joint silver medal. This decision, announced on Wednesday, prompted the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to release a statement expressing disappointment and announcing their exploration of further legal options.

Despite the disappointment, Phogat’s return to India serves as a testament to her unwavering spirit and the nation’s support for her accomplishments. Her journey, marked by both victory and controversy, continues to inspire and captivate the country.
