The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has expressed its optimism regarding the outcome of wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) concerning her disqualification from the Paris 2024 Olympics. Vinesh, who had secured a semifinal victory against Yui Susaki in the women’s 50kg freestyle event, was disqualified due to failing to meet the weight requirement by a mere 100 grams on the morning of the final. This unfortunate incident led to her decision to retire from wrestling. However, two days later, Vinesh filed an appeal against her disqualification with the assistance of senior advocates Harish Salve and Vidushpat Singhania, along with the Krida Legal team.
The IOA, in a statement, emphasized their hope for a positive resolution in Vinesh’s case. The hearing before the Ad hoc Division of the CAS, presided over by Sole Arbitrator Dr. Annabelle Bennett, spanned over three hours, involving Vinesh, United World Wrestling, the International Olympic Committee, and the IOA as an interested party. Each party was granted opportunities to present legal submissions and oral arguments. Dr. Bennett has indicated that the operative part of the order is expected to be released soon, followed by a detailed order with justifications.
IOA President Dr. PT Usha expressed gratitude to the legal team and reaffirmed their unwavering support for Vinesh, regardless of the CAS decision. “We are proud of her countless achievements on the wrestling mat throughout her stellar career,” she stated. The sporting world awaits the CAS’s decision on Vinesh Phogat’s appeal, which could potentially impact her future in the sport.
