Virat Kohli’s recent comments regarding his strike rate have drawn the ire of former India captain Sunil Gavaskar. Kohli’s rant, in which he criticized commentators for questioning his strike rate, has sparked a heated debate.
Gavaskar, while commentating on RCB’s match against Gujarat Titans, expressed his disapproval of Kohli’s outburst. He argued that the commentators had only been critical of Kohli when he got out before the slog overs with a strike rate below 120. Gavaskar also questioned why Kohli would respond to criticism if he truly did not care about outside noise.
Gavaskar emphasized that commentators are simply doing their job and providing their observations on the game. He also accused Kohli of hypocrisy, pointing out that Kohli had previously claimed not to care about outside noise.
Kohli’s strike rate against spin has been a major concern for Royal Challengers Bangalore, who are aiming to keep their playoff hopes alive. While Kohli has been among the top run-getters in the ongoing IPL 2024, his slow scoring rate against spin has hindered the team’s progress.
Despite Kohli’s impressive 70-run innings against Gujarat Titans, where he scored at a strike rate of 179 against spinners, his overall strike rate against spin remains a concern. Kohli’s third-best scoring rate against spin in a T20 innings (at least 20 balls against spinners) was 179, indicating that he may need to find a way to accelerate his scoring against spin if he wants to help his team succeed in the upcoming T20 World Cup in June.
