This summer, Scapia witnessed a remarkable 65% surge in average monthly flight bookings to visa-free destinations, highlighting a growing preference for hassle-free travel among global travelers. The allure of visa-free destinations fueled a 64% increase in bookings compared to January, with countries like Qatar, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Thailand, Malaysia, and Hong Kong proving popular choices.
The 2024 Henley Passport Index revealed that six countries – France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Japan, and Singapore – hold the most powerful passports globally, offering visa-free entry to an impressive 194 out of 227 destinations worldwide. Japan and Singapore have maintained their top spot for five consecutive years, reinforcing the link between economic performance, visa-free travel, and openness to global trade and investment.
In India, the tourism market witnessed a 30% increase in travel bookings between February and May 2024 compared to January. Domestically, Goa, Varanasi, Srinagar, Port Blair, and Leh emerged as popular choices. Internationally, travelers favored destinations in the UAE, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka. While Paris, London, and San Francisco remained popular, Southeast Asian countries, particularly lesser-known destinations like Penida Island (Indonesia), Nonthaburi (Thailand), and Kowloon (Hong Kong), witnessed a significant surge in bookings, accounting for 35% of summer season bookings.
Solo travel continued to gain traction among Indian travelers, with Southeast Asia emerging as a top choice. Thailand and Malaysia saw a 4X increase in popularity, while Nepal witnessed a 3X rise in bookings. Women led the solo travel trend, experiencing a 47% growth in bookings on Scapia, outpacing men at 39% growth. The rise in solo travel, particularly among women, reflects a positive shift in the Indian travel market, attributed to advancements in technology, enhanced security measures, and readily available online travel information.
The airline industry is steadily recovering from the pandemic, with total traffic matching and surpassing 2019 levels in February 2024. While traffic between Asia and Europe remains affected by the war in Ukraine, connectivity to the Asia Pacific region is expected to be fully restored this year. Global passenger numbers are projected to increase by 10.4% year-on-year (YoY) or 11.6% in revenue passenger kilometers (RPK). Europe is expected to see solid growth in passenger numbers, particularly in smaller economies, while the Middle East is forecast to have a more favorable economic environment despite geopolitical tensions. Africa is the only region likely to see a contraction in passenger numbers this year despite strong traffic in 2023.
Looking ahead, global passenger numbers are projected to increase by 3.8% per year on average, resulting in over four billion additional passenger journeys by 2043 compared to 2023. While European and North American markets are expected to see slower demand growth at 2.3% and 2.7% per year, respectively, Asia Pacific is anticipated to record the fastest rise in passenger numbers, contributing to over half of the net increase in global passenger numbers by 2043.
