The city of Visakhapatnam, nestled along the picturesque Bay of Bengal, experienced a surge in tourism on Sunday, November 11, 2024, as locals and visitors alike celebrated the auspicious ‘Karthika Masam’. The festive atmosphere, coupled with the city’s natural beauty, attracted a record number of visitors, painting a vibrant tapestry across its scenic landscapes.
The city’s most frequented attractions were brimming with activity. R.K Beach, Tenneti Park, Kailasagiri, VMRDA Park, Rushikonda, and Bheemunipatnam – each showcased the city’s diverse appeal. Indira Gandhi Zoological Park (IGZP) saw a remarkable influx of 6,509 visitors, generating a substantial ₹5.10 lakh in revenue for the day. The stretch along Beach Road, from Rushikonda to the Naval Coastal Battery, was a bustling hub of activity, with crowds participating in organized games, capturing selfies, and taking advantage of the scenic photography opportunities.
But it was the tranquil hills of Vanjangi, also known as ‘Meghala Konadalu’ in Paderu mandal, that truly stole the show. Early morning hours witnessed around 3,500 visitors flocking to experience the renowned sunrise views. Trekkers embarked on pre-dawn expeditions, with some choosing to camp overnight at the hill’s base to fully immerse themselves in the breathtaking panorama. This year’s ‘Karthika Masam’ celebrations set a new record for visitor numbers at Vanjangi, underlining its growing popularity as a destination for nature enthusiasts.
The allure of Visakhapatnam’s scenic spots extended beyond the city limits. The cooler climate in the broader Alluri Sitharama Raju (ASR) district, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 18°C, drew tourists to the high-altitude destinations. Chintapalli, Paderu, Minumuluru, and Lambasingi, all within the district, were buzzing with tourists seeking respite from the heat. Lambasingi’s viewpoints, along with Madagada near Araku Valley, and popular waterfalls like Kothapalli, Chaparai, and Katika, attracted a significant number of visitors. Chaparai waterfall alone saw 2,724 visitors on Sunday. The limited hotel accommodation in these remote areas led to a high demand for tented lodging, offering tourists an adventurous and immersive overnight experience in the heart of nature.
Visakhapatnam’s scenic spots and natural attractions are witnessing a steady rise in popularity, captivating not only locals but also tourists from surrounding districts. This surge in tourism underscores the region’s appeal as a destination where nature and tradition converge, particularly during the winter season. As the city continues to draw visitors with its charm and beauty, ‘Karthika Masam’ has undoubtedly solidified Visakhapatnam’s reputation as a must-visit destination in India.
