Vital Proteins, the leading provider of collagen-based wellness products, is taking a bold step towards sustainability by introducing a new paper-based canister for its best-selling collagen peptides. This marks a significant shift in packaging for the brand, which has been utilizing plastic for over a decade. The move reflects the growing consumer demand for sustainable products and packaging, with nearly 80% of North American shoppers expressing a preference for sustainable options.
The new paper-based canisters, made from responsibly sourced fibers certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), will reduce plastic use by over 90% across all Vital Proteins canister offerings. This translates to a reduction of approximately 1,800 metric tons of plastic, equivalent to nearly 4 million pounds! To further minimize waste, Vital Proteins has designed the canisters to be curbside recyclable. Consumers are encouraged to check with their local municipality for recycling guidelines.
The transition to paper packaging was not a hasty decision. Three years of research and development went into perfecting the new canister, ensuring it maintained the premium quality associated with Vital Proteins. The design features a unique, patented pull-tab lid for easy scooping and a secure closure, eliminating the need for twisting. Rigorous stability testing has ensured that the new paper-based tub maintains the freshness of the collagen peptides while also being splash-proof and moisture resistant.
This packaging innovation is part of Vital Proteins’ ongoing commitment to creating a more sustainable future. The brand has already taken steps to remove plastic scoops from its canisters, aiming for a 100% scoop-free portfolio by the end of 2025. Their dedication to sustainability extends to their supply chain, where they hold their suppliers to high standards to ensure responsible sourcing and sustainable practices.
This significant move highlights Vital Proteins’ commitment to leading by example in the wellness industry. Jill Abbott, General Manager at Vital Proteins, emphasized their responsibility to invest in sustainability initiatives and reduce their plastic footprint. “The road to get here wasn’t always easy, but we’re incredibly proud to take this meaningful next step in our journey toward a more responsible future as we introduce our new paper-based canister – and to be the first collagen brand to do it.”
To celebrate this milestone, Vital Proteins is donating to the U.S. Plastics Pact, a non-profit organization working towards eliminating problematic plastics and promoting reusable, recyclable, and compostable packaging solutions. By supporting the U.S. Plastics Pact, Vital Proteins further demonstrates its commitment to sustainable practices and reducing plastic waste.
The transition to paper-based canisters will be phased in over the next few years, with all Vital Proteins collagen peptides products targeted to be in the new packaging by 2026. Vital Proteins Unflavored Collagen Peptides is the first product to be available in the new paper-based packaging, currently available in a 24oz size canister at club stores and a 20oz size canister at national retailers beginning in September 2024.
This shift to sustainable packaging underscores Vital Proteins’ dedication to balancing wellness and environmental responsibility. By choosing paper-based canisters, Vital Proteins is demonstrating its commitment to a greener future and empowering consumers to make more sustainable choices.
