Walmart Confirms Closure of Another Store, Affecting 105 Employees
Walmart, the nation’s largest grocery chain, has confirmed the closure of another store, located in the Fair Park neighborhood of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The store will close its doors for the final time on May 17, affecting 105 employees.
The closure is part of a trend of store closures by Walmart this year, with six other locations already closed nationwide. The first two closures occurred in San Diego County, California, with the closure of stores on Imperial Ave. in San Diego and Fletcher Parkway in El Cajon on February 9. Walmart cited financial underperformance as the reason for these closures, but social media users suggested that crime and shoplifting had also played a role.
A store in Columbus, Ohio closed on February 16, followed by the closure of the West Covina store in California on March 29. On April 5, Walmart closed a store in Towson, Maryland, just outside Baltimore. And on April 12, a fourth Walmart store in California closed, this time the Neighborhood Market store in Granite Bay.
Despite the closures, Walmart still has 11 other locations in the city of Milwaukee, and shoppers will not have to travel far to find the nearest store. Walmart has also encouraged affected employees to apply for positions at other Walmart and Sam’s Club stores.
The closure of this Walmart store is a reminder of the challenges facing many brick-and-mortar retailers in the face of online competition and changing consumer preferences. Walmart’s closures are part of a broader trend of store closures across the retail industry, as companies look to optimize their store networks and adapt to the changing retail landscape.
