Warm Home Discount: Get £150 Off Your Energy Bills This Winter

The cost-of-living crisis isn’t letting up, and rising energy bills are adding to the pressure. Starting tomorrow, gas and electricity bills will increase by £149 due to Ofgem’s energy price cap hike. This winter could be particularly tough for many, especially with the government’s decision to means-test the winter fuel allowance, leaving 10 million pensioners without the annual £200 payment.

But there’s help available! The Warm Home Discount scheme is one such lifeline, offering eligible households a one-off £150 discount on their electricity bill, which can sometimes extend to gas bills as well.

What is the Warm Home Discount?

The Warm Home Discount is a government scheme that provides financial support to low-income households struggling with energy bills. It’s not a cash payment; instead, your energy provider automatically reduces your bill by £150. You don’t need to lift a finger – the discount is applied directly to your account.

Who is eligible?

To qualify for the Warm Home Discount in England or Wales, you must meet one of the following criteria:

*

Receive the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit:

This is a benefit for pensioners with low incomes.

*

Be on a low income and have high energy costs:

This means your income must be below a certain threshold, and your energy bills are a significant portion of your household budget.

The scheme opens in October, so if you think you qualify and haven’t received a letter, contact the Warm Home Discount helpline by February 29, 2024. You can reach them at 0800 107 8002, Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm.

Important Notes:

* The scheme is not available in Northern Ireland.

* If you live in a park home, you’ll need to apply through Charsis, the administrator for grants.

Can I use the discount for my gas bill?

If your energy supplier provides both electricity and gas, you might be able to apply the discount to your gas bill. Contact your supplier to find out more.

What if I’m on a pre-pay or pay-as-you-go meter?

Don’t worry! You’re still eligible. Your energy supplier will inform you how to redeem the discount, which might involve a voucher that you can use to top up your meter.
