Concerns about the water quality in the Seine River have resurfaced at the Paris Paralympic Games, prompting organizers to alter the schedule for the para triathlon races. Initially planned for two days, all 11 medal events will now be held on a single day, September 1st. This change, announced in a statement by Paris 2024 organizers, aims to provide athletes and coaches with greater certainty and flexibility in light of fluctuating weather conditions.
The decision emphasizes the ongoing scrutiny of the Seine River’s water quality. Bacteria levels in the waterway, historically plagued by pollution, fluctuate considerably depending on rainfall. Heavy rains often lead to an influx of wastewater and runoff, causing bacteria levels to spike.
While the swimming course remains unchanged, organizers have assured that the water quality and flow of the Seine River will be monitored daily. Decisions regarding preparatory swims for para triathletes, both in the days leading up to the event and on the morning of September 1st, will be made prior to each race. Moreover, organizers have indicated that events can be rescheduled to September 2nd and 3rd if deemed necessary.
Thursday’s familiarization swims proceeded as planned in the morning. The Paris Paralympics organizers’ swift response to water quality concerns underscores their commitment to prioritizing athlete safety and maintaining the integrity of the competition.
