Manchester United icon Wayne Rooney found himself on the receiving end of a cheeky jab from wrestling superstar Drew McIntyre during a recent WWE live show.
Rooney, accompanied by his sons, immersed himself in the world of wrestling at London’s O2 Arena on Friday (April 19), where he witnessed an enthralling night of action-packed matches featuring WWE stars like Undisputed Champion Cody Rhodes and former Women’s Champion Natalya.
Scottish WWE veteran and previous champion McIntyre, known for his gallant performances, paid tribute to Rooney and his illustrious sporting career while addressing the crowd. However, the tribute quickly took a humorous turn when McIntyre quipped:
“We’re two British icons, I’m only British WWE champion three times. He’s smashed football but aren’t we the same age? What happened to you?”
McIntyre’s witty remark resonated with the audience, leading to a sea of laughter, even managing to draw a grin from Rooney himself.
The former Red Devil is no stranger to the wrestling scene, having previously attended a WWE event in Manchester back in 2015. On that occasion, Wade Barrett took a jab at Rooney, stating: “In this ring are two men who can be easily be described as championship material. Which is, of course, is more than can be said of Wayne Rooney and Manchester United.”
While Rooney has never seriously considered a career in professional wrestling, he has hinted at an interest in boxing with Misfits. However, he remains focused on returning to management, saying: “You never know. No, they’ve been in touch and asked the question, but I think at the minute I want to focus on getting back into management not boxing.”
“There’s been a few. Obviously Misfits have been in, and that’s been all over the news or whatever, but listen: I want to focus on getting back into management. That’s my focus.”
