In the ongoing criminal trial of former President Donald Trump, the second week’s proceedings unfolded with prosecutors presenting their case and the defense maintaining Trump’s innocence.
Prosecutor Matthew Colangelo outlined the prosecution’s argument, alleging a conspiracy to interfere with the 2016 presidential election by concealing Trump’s alleged affair with McDougal. Colangelo asserted that Trump orchestrated a scheme and covered it up through fraudulent business records.
Defense attorney Todd Blanche countered by emphasizing Trump’s character and questioning the credibility of witnesses, including Michael Cohen and Stormy Daniels. Blanche portrayed Trump as an innocent man defending himself against baseless accusations.
Judge Juan Merchan ruled that if Trump testifies, prosecutors could cross-examine him about rulings from previous civil and defamation cases. Merchan also addressed media attention surrounding the trial, assuring a juror who expressed concerns that her identity would be protected.
David Pecker, former CEO of American Media, Inc., was the first witness called to the stand. He testified about his role and company policies regarding payments for stories and provided background information on other individuals involved.
Trump, present throughout the proceedings, appeared engaged and attentive, occasionally conferring with his attorneys and taking notes. The trial continues with Pecker’s testimony expected to resume Tuesday.
