The Governor of West Bengal, CV Ananda Bose, has taken the significant step of forwarding the recently passed anti-rape bill to President Droupadi Murmu for her review. This action comes on the heels of his public critique of the Mamata Banerjee-led administration for their perceived failure to submit the required technical report alongside the bill.
In a statement released by Raj Bhavan, the Governor’s official residence, it was noted that he had identified several omissions and commissions within the hastily passed bill. The statement highlighted glaring defects and lapses in the legislation, urging the government to conduct thorough research and refrain from impulsive responses.
This bill now joins a similar group of anti-rape bills from other states, including Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Arunachal Pradesh, that are currently awaiting President Murmu’s decision. The President’s role is crucial in the legislative process, as she possesses the authority to either approve or reject bills passed by state legislatures.
