The West Indies cricket team displayed a dominant performance on Sunday, defeating South Africa by a convincing 30 runs at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy. This victory secured the T20 international series for the West Indies with a game still to be played.
The West Indies, batting first, amassed a formidable total of 179-6. Their innings was characterized by a flurry of sixes, with the team smashing a total of 13 sixes throughout the match. Shai Hope led the charge, smashing 41 runs off just 22 balls, including two fours and four sixes. Captain Rovman Powell also contributed significantly, scoring 35 runs from 22 balls, with three sixes to his name.
South Africa, despite a strong start of 57-0 after four overs, ultimately fell short in their chase. The chase faltered as wickets tumbled, leaving them needing 42 runs off the last four overs at 138-6. Reeza Hendricks, the South African opener, top-scored with 44 runs off 18 balls, including two sixes. However, his dismissal, bowled by Romario Shepherd, marked a turning point in the match.
Shepherd proved to be a key bowler for the West Indies, claiming 3-15 in four overs. Shamar Joseph also starred with the ball, returning figures of 3-31.
The West Indies remained unchanged from the team that won the first T20 by seven wickets on Friday, while South Africa made one change, bringing in Lizaad Williams for Nandre Burger. Williams finished with figures of 3-36.
The series-concluding T20 is scheduled for Tuesday, also at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba.
This victory comes after South Africa dominated the preceding two-match Test series against West Indies. They won the second Test in Providence, Guyana, after a rain-affected draw in the opening Test at Port of Spain, Trinidad.
