WestJet has announced the ratification of the first collective bargaining agreement with the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA). This agreement, which represents WestJet’s Aircraft Maintenance Engineers and other Technical Operations employees, marks a significant milestone for the airline. The certification of AMFA as the union for these employees has paved the way for this historic agreement, highlighting the mutual commitment to improving working conditions and creating a collaborative environment. This landmark agreement underscores WestJet’s dedication to its technical workforce and sets a precedent for future negotiations.
Diederik Pen, President of WestJet Airlines and Group Chief Operating Officer, expressed his satisfaction with the agreement, stating, “Reaching this milestone is good news for our organization and our guests, solidifying a five-year agreement that provides stability to our business and reflects the instrumental value and contributions of our Aircraft Maintenance Engineers and other Technical Operations employees.” While acknowledging the positive impact of this agreement, Pen also acknowledged the recent disruptions experienced over the July long weekend, stating, “While we are grateful to have achieved resolution with a clear path forward together as a unified team, we recognize that the unprecedented impact of the disruption over July long weekend is still concerning for our guests, the communities we serve and our people.”
