JD Wetherspoons, the popular pub chain known for its budget-friendly drinks and hearty meals, is set to unveil its first-ever ‘Super Spoons’ location in Newcastle. This ambitious project involves a £5 million investment and will transform the existing Mile Castle Wetherspoons into a sprawling pub and hotel complex.
The Mile Castle, already one of the largest Wetherspoons pubs in the area, is poised to double in size. The expansion will incorporate a 26-bedroom hotel in the neighboring building, providing convenient accommodation for visitors and locals alike. Furthermore, a 3,000-square-foot outdoor space will be created, offering patrons a spacious and inviting area to relax and socialize.
The expansion plans extend beyond the construction of new facilities. A comprehensive interior refurbishment is also in the works, promising new carpets, improved lighting, and an extended third-floor bar. Additionally, a brand-new cellar will be built to support the multi-level plans for the beer garden, which will feature a terrace and patio area.
The hotel component of the ‘Super Spoons’ concept will offer guests a comfortable and convenient stay. All rooms will be equipped with en-suite bathrooms, ensuring privacy and comfort. Notably, two specially designed rooms will cater to the needs of guests with disabilities, demonstrating Wetherspoons’ commitment to inclusivity.
Commenting on the project, Wetherspoon founder and chairman Tim Martin expressed enthusiasm and confidence. He stated, ‘The investment highlights our commitment to the pub, its customers and staff, as well as the city of Newcastle.’ The pub’s popularity and the creation of the first Wetherspoons hotel in the city are expected to be warmly welcomed by patrons.
While the expansion promises exciting new offerings, it also brings temporary closure. The Mile Castle will be closed from June 24 until its grand reopening on September 3 to facilitate the renovations. The hotel is scheduled to open its doors on November 12, giving locals and visitors alike something to eagerly anticipate.
