WhatsApp Joins the Passkey Revolution

Meta’s encrypted messaging app, WhatsApp, has joined the passkey revolution. With the latest iOS update, users can now use their iPhone’s biometric authentication (Face ID or Touch ID) or passcode as a secure and convenient way to log into WhatsApp. Passkeys offer an enhanced level of security compared to traditional passwords and SMS two-factor authentication, promising a more seamless and protected login experience. Additionally, passkeys enable users to sign in even when offline, as the authentication key is stored on their device.

Passkeys have emerged as a promising alternative to conventional authentication methods, eliminating the vulnerabilities of passwords and the hassles of SMS verification. They leverage the latest technological advancements and provide a more intuitive and secure way to access online accounts.

To check if the passkey feature is available on your WhatsApp, navigate to the WhatsApp settings menu. If the option is present, you can activate it and start enjoying the convenience and security of passkey-based login. It’s important to note that the rollout of this feature may take some time, so if you don’t see the option immediately, keep checking for updates.

Currently, passkey support is limited to the WhatsApp iOS app, and it’s not yet available on the Mac desktop app or web portal. To log into WhatsApp on these platforms, users will still need to use the ‘Linked Devices’ menu and scan a QR code using another logged-in device.

Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, did not provide an immediate response to our request for additional information regarding the passkey implementation. Passkeys have the potential to revolutionize the way we authenticate online, providing a more secure and user-friendly experience across various devices and platforms.
