WhatsApp, owned by Meta, has announced the rollout of passkey verification for iOS users. Passkeys offer a significantly more secure and user-friendly method of logging into the app. Unlike traditional passwords, passkeys are securely stored on the device and are impervious to hacking attempts. Users can effortlessly authenticate their identity using their device’s security features, such as fingerprint or face recognition, eliminating the need for remembering complex passwords. The convenience is further enhanced by the ability to log back in using a passkey even without an internet connection, as the authentication key is stored directly on the device. This feature was previously introduced for Android users six months ago, and its arrival on iOS marks a significant step forward in online security.
To set up a passkey, users simply need to navigate to the ‘Accounts’ section in WhatsApp’s Settings, select ‘Passkeys’, and follow the prompts to create a passkey. Upon logging into WhatsApp from a different device, users will be able to verify their identity using their phone’s security features, bypassing the need to enter the six-digit verification code.
The implementation of passkeys is a testament to WhatsApp’s commitment to enhancing the privacy and security of its users. By leveraging the FIDO Alliance’s passkey technology, WhatsApp is aligning with industry leaders like Google and Apple in ushering in a new era of online security.
