Whiskey Enlightenment

The name WhistlePig has become synonymous with rye whiskey, dominating the premium category for over a decade. However, the Vermont-based distillery has ventured beyond its rye roots, introducing single malt offerings like the Beholden last year. Now, they have raised the bar with the release of a new 25-year-old single malt, the Badönkådonk—a play on words that may induce a chuckle.

The Beholden, a 21-year-old whiskey, was distilled in Canada at a distillery likely to be Glenora in Cape Breton. Building on this success, the Badönkådonk was also distilled at the same distillery and aged for a quarter century in new American oak barrels. In 2020, it was transported to Vermont for further maturation in Silver Oak Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon barrels, creating a unique and complex flavor profile.

Tasting notes reveal a symphony of stone fruits, cedar wood, and a hint of discord on the palate. The whiskey’s journey through different barrels has imparted a delightful balance of spice, tannic oak, dried fruit, and a subtle touch of wood smoke. WhistlePig’s head blender, Meghan Ireland, emphasizes the exceptional maturation process that sets their single malts apart. They collaborated with Silver Oak, known for their exquisite Cabernets aged exclusively in American oak, to push the boundaries of whiskey making.

Adding to the intrigue, WhistlePig has enlisted the legendary Monty Python cofounder John Cleese to promote the Badönkådonk. Cleese, a self-proclaimed scotch enthusiast, was initially skeptical but was won over by the whiskey’s exceptional taste. His involvement brings a touch of humor and adds to the allure of this extraordinary release.

The Badönkådonk is a limited edition offering, priced at a staggering $2,000. However, it is currently available at the WhistlePig website for its listed price, while supplies last. For those seeking an unforgettable whiskey experience, the Badönkådonk is an exceptional choice that combines premium ingredients, meticulous craftsmanship, and a touch of whimsy.
