A popular seaside town in North Yorkshire, Whitby, boasts two of the UK’s top 10 best fish and chip shops. The Fry Awards earlier this year named The Magpie Cafe and Trenchers among the prestigious top 10.
While The Magpie Cafe offers all the classic fish and chip shop favorites, it goes beyond the traditional, boasting a more extensive seafood menu. Starters include king prawn tails in garlic butter, calamari, poached salmon, and homemade Whitby crab bisque. Mains feature a range of fish options, from classic cod to rarer choices like plaice, woof, sole, and halibut fillet. One satisfied diner shared, “We visited twice on a holiday in Whitby. It remains our favorite restaurant, there’s a buzzy atmosphere, fabulous choice and quality of fish at very reasonable prices and a friendly service.”
Whitby’s other winning chip shop, Trenchers, is located on the iconic harbor. The menu, again, offers more than the average chip shop, with options including seafood salads, crab, lobster, fresh fish, homemade pies, and lasagnes. One guest raved, “This cannot be beaten for fish and chips! It was an exceptionally good meal with mushy peas, a generous amount of tartar sauce, perfectly cooked chips and what can we say about the fish? It had a lovely taste and delicious batter. Not only this but all the staff were so friendly and helpful.”
The eight other chip shops awarded are: Fish City, Belfast; Harbour Lights, Falmouth, Cornwall; Lakeside Fish and Chips, Poole, Dorset; Linford’s Traditional Fish and Chips, Market Deeping, Lincolnshire; Maltings Fish And Chips, Baldock, Hertfordshire; Pier Point Fish & Chips, Torquay, Devon; The Wee Chippy, Anstruther, Fife; and Trenchers Spanish City, Whitley Bay, Newcastle upon Tyne.
