White House Reaffirms Efforts to Free Detained Americans in Russia

The White House declared on Wednesday that it is actively working to secure the release of two Americans detained in Russia. This statement came as the administration voiced its strong disapproval of the trial of journalist Evan Gershkovich.

Russia has hinted at the possibility of a prisoner swap, sending signals to the United States. In response, National Security Council spokesman John Kirby stated that Moscow is utilizing both Gershkovich and fellow detained American Paul Whelan as bargaining chips.

Kirby emphasized the administration’s deep concern for the well-being of both Americans and assured them that the government is committed to bringing them home. He declined to provide specifics about ongoing diplomatic efforts with Russia regarding the prisoners but confirmed that these efforts are ongoing.

Gershkovich, a reporter for the Wall Street Journal, was arrested in March 2023 on espionage charges. His family, employer, and the White House have all denounced these charges as false.

Kirby revealed that Russia has only allowed the US embassy limited access to Gershkovich during his trial in the city of Yekaterinburg. He firmly stated that Gershkovich has never been employed by the US government and is not a spy. He emphasized that journalism is not a crime and Gershkovich’s detention is unjustified.

Despite the circumstances, Kirby expressed reassurance about Gershkovich’s well-being, citing reports indicating good spirits. He found it encouraging to see Gershkovich’s smile and hear reports of his positive morale.
