Whitefield Crossroads Remains Unrepaired Despite Road Improvement Plans

The heavily trafficked junction of Bury New Road, Church Lane, and Stanley Road in Whitefield, Bury, is in dire need of repair. The intersection is riddled with craters, cracks, and holes, posing hazards to drivers, motorcyclists, and cyclists.

Despite announcing a £3.2 million investment in road repairs, Bury Council has prioritized resurfacing Hamilton Road, a desirable road with Edwardian homes valued at £800,000, just 150 yards from the damaged junction.

The council’s decision has sparked outrage among Whitefield residents, who point to the glaring contrast between the newly painted cycle lane markings and the deteriorated road surface. The Love Whitefield group has posted an image on social media, highlighting the irony of creating a safe cycling zone next to a treacherous junction.

Despite increased complaints about road conditions and potholes, the council has not included the Whitefield junction in its planned repair works. The council cites inadequate funding from the Department for Transport as a reason for prioritizing other roads.

Councillor Alan Quinn, cabinet member for the environment, climate change, and operations, has pledged to improve roads across Bury, but acknowledges that disruptions are inevitable.

Unfortunately, the bumpy ride in Whitefield town center looks set to continue. In a statement, the council said that the junction will be monitored but is not currently included in funding plans.
