The British high street is undergoing a period of transformation, with WHSmith being one of the latest businesses to adapt to the changing retail landscape. On May 11th, two WHSmith stores closed permanently, reflecting the growing trend towards online shopping and the financial pressures faced by high street businesses.
However, despite these closures, WHSmith is also embracing new opportunities. The company has recently unveiled plans to open 17 Toys R Us shop-in-shops this summer. This move is a strategic response to the increasing popularity of the Toys R Us brand and the demand for a wider range of products in WHSmith stores.
The first 17 Toys R Us concessions will open in various locations across the UK, including Fosse Park in Leicester, Guildford in Surrey, and Royal Leamington Spa in Warwickshire. A further 30 concessions are planned by Christmas, indicating WHSmith’s continued commitment to investing in the high street.
WHSmith’s high street managing director, Sean Toal, expressed his enthusiasm for the new partnership, stating that it represents an exciting time for both customers and employees. He emphasized WHSmith’s role as the ‘Hub of the High Street,’ offering a diverse range of products and services, including books, stationery, and Post Office services.
The addition of Toys R Us concessions is expected to enhance the appeal of WHSmith stores and provide customers with even more reasons to shop there. The first Toys R Us concession opened in June 2023 at WHSmith’s Monks Cross Retail Park store in York, and the remaining concessions are scheduled to open in the coming months.
