Wildfire Evacuations Ordered in Northwestern Alberta

Residents in northwestern Alberta have been ordered to evacuate immediately due to the threat of wildfire. The evacuation order affects residents of the Municipal District of Peace No. 135 and Birch Hills County who live near the fire burning at the intersection of Township Road 830 and Range Road 231. People located within a five-kilometer radius of the intersection are being told to evacuate east to Grimshaw, Alta., and register at the Royal Canadian Legion. The fire covers about 250 hectares, and road closures are in effect on Highway 684 from Highway 740 to Peace River Correctional Centre. Fire crews are on scene along the highway, and people are being asked to avoid the area. The evacuation order was issued by the Alberta Emergency Management Agency at 5:27 p.m. Tuesday. The MD of Peace has a population of more than 1,700 residents. MD officials said on social media that the RCMP are on location and coordinating evacuation efforts.
