Windows 11 Gets Smarter: Notepad and Paint Get AI Upgrades

Get ready for a smarter Windows experience! Microsoft is injecting a dose of AI into everyday applications like Notepad and Paint, promising a more intuitive and powerful user experience.

Notepad Gets a Rewrite:

The humble Notepad app has already seen a significant boost with autocorrect and spellcheck, and now it’s gaining an even more powerful feature – AI-powered rewriting. This allows you to select any text and instruct the AI to rewrite it in a variety of ways. You can ask for a longer version, adjust the tone, or even change the format of your text. The rewrite feature is customizable, giving you more control over the final output. Microsoft has also ensured that earlier versions of the rewritten text are preserved, allowing you to easily revert if needed. The feature is currently available to testers in select countries: the U.S., Canada, U.K., Germany, France, and Italy.

Speed and Performance Boosts:

Alongside the new features, Microsoft claims Notepad will see a significant performance boost – up to 35% faster, with some users potentially experiencing a 55% increase in speed.

Paint Gets Creative with Generative Fill:

The Paint app, known for its simple yet effective image editing capabilities, is also getting an AI-powered upgrade. Introducing ‘Generative Fill’, a feature that allows you to seamlessly add AI-generated elements to your images. Simply select the area you want to enhance, provide a text prompt (like ‘add a castle’), and the AI will create and insert the requested element. This allows you to effortlessly add objects, backgrounds, or even textures to your images.

Erase the Unwanted:

Another useful AI feature in Paint is ‘Generative Erase’, which lets you remove unwanted elements from images. Simply brush over the area you want to erase, and the AI will magically remove it, leaving behind a clean and seamless image.

Powering the AI Features:

It’s worth noting that the Generative Fill feature, for now, is only available on Copilot+ PCs with Snapdragon CPUs. This is due to the feature requiring a powerful NPU (Neural Processing Unit) to function efficiently.

The Future of AI-Enhanced Apps:

Microsoft is cautiously rolling out these AI features, learning from user feedback and adapting them to ensure a smooth and user-friendly experience. As the technology continues to evolve, we can expect even more innovative AI-powered features to become part of our daily computing experience.
