Windows 12 Concept: A Minimalist, macOS-Inspired Redesign?

While we don’t have any official information about Windows 12, or even if it’s in development, a talented designer named AR 4789 has created a compelling concept video showcasing what it could look like. The design, reminiscent of macOS, features a minimalist Start menu, a revamped File Explorer, and a more intuitive way to change wallpapers with a simple swipe.

The concept incorporates a floating dock at the bottom and a taskbar across the top, lending a sense of cohesion. It’s a visually appealing design that feels like a natural progression from Windows 11. The video goes beyond aesthetics, showcasing a streamlined installation process that even allows you to play games while you wait. You can also see a ‘Tool for Focus,’ designed to minimize distractions with Focus Sessions.

The File Explorer gets a makeover with a new Quick Access layout and a display of recent files. The Start menu is customizable, allowing users to add, remove, and arrange widgets, offering greater control over their experience. Further personalization options include selecting from a variety of integrated wallpapers and switching between light and dark modes.

Copilot, the AI assistant, plays a smaller role in the concept, but features like creating multiple desktops are still present. Notably, the concept introduces the ability to choose from different Start menu layouts, ranging from a slimmer to a broader menu, providing users with additional flexibility.

While these are just concepts, they offer an interesting glimpse into potential design directions for Windows. Rumors initially suggested a Windows 12 release this year, but it seems the more standard 24H2 update is on the horizon instead. Could a redesigned version of Windows like this come next year? It’s possible, but with Windows 10 still being the most popular version and not unsupported until 2025, it’s unlikely that Microsoft would introduce a major new version before many users have fully embraced the current iteration.
