Wisconsin Voters Skeptical of Kamala Harris’ Running Mate, Tim Walz

In the crucial battleground state of Wisconsin, voters are not particularly enthused about Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate, Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota, despite his Midwestern origins. While some Wisconsin residents were unfamiliar with Walz, those who did express their opinions were generally critical.

Brian Morawski from Milwaukee County remarked, “I mean, if you like people that are completely stupid, he’s great.” Diana Altwies of Waukesha County, a Trump supporter, admitted to having heard Walz’s name but stated, “I’ve never seen him on TV or anything.”

Kathy Przekwas of Kenosha County expressed her dislike for Walz, describing him as “fast-talking” and prone to making false claims. She also criticized his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic in Minnesota, particularly his implementation of a hotline for reporting social distancing violations.

Walz’s stay-at-home executive order in Minnesota carried potential penalties of up to a $1,000 fine or 90 days of jail time, according to the Minnesota Reformer. Przekwas believed that Walz’s Midwestern persona was not genuine, stating, “I think he tries to portray that, but I don’t think he really is.”

Despite these negative sentiments, Wisconsin Democratic Party Chairman Ben Wikler asserted that Walz’s Midwestern demeanor and values resonate with many voters, particularly in Wisconsin. “So many people have said to me, ‘He’s like my dad,'” Wikler stated, emphasizing that Wisconsinites value good neighbors and see those qualities in Walz.

However, Wisconsin Republican Party Executive Director Andrew Iverson countered that voters are more enthusiastic about JD Vance, Trump’s running mate, who is also from the Midwest. Iverson highlighted Vance’s compelling personal story and claimed that voters are aware of Walz’s “failed record” as governor.

The contrasting opinions on Walz demonstrate the complexities of political campaigns and the importance of appealing to voters on a local level, particularly in key battleground states like Wisconsin. As the 2024 election cycle unfolds, it remains to be seen whether Walz can overcome the skepticism of some Wisconsin voters and effectively connect with a wider audience.
