Dee Tobi, a 26-year-old woman, has never worn makeup in her life, not even to weddings. She believes that embracing her natural skin is an empowering decision. While her friends and family have encouraged her to try makeup, she has never felt the need to use it.
Dee’s decision to go bare-faced has saved her thousands of pounds over the years, as the average British woman spends £18,000 on makeup and beauty across her lifetime. She spends less than half an hour getting ready to leave the house, whether preparing for work or a night out.
Dee’s friends have called her ‘lucky’ for going bare-faced, but Dee’s choices simply come down to preference. She adds: ‘It’s just that I like the natural look ‘I think it’s really empowering to feel you don’t need to wear it at any point.
‘No mascara, no concealer, even if there’s a spot – it’s empowering to say no, I’m natural how God made me.’
Dee thinks she’d look completely different wearing it, and while she feels no pressure to do so at the moment, she may give it a try at some point, perhaps for a special occasion.
‘You have to stick to what you believe in no matter what – situations where people say I have to wear makeup and I say no, that’s powerful,’ Dee concludes.
‘My friends say I should try it because I’d look different, I think they’d be excited to see how I look in it – if I wore it my friends would be shocked.
‘I know if I wear it, it’ll give me a different look but I’ve just not tried it and as time goes by I continue not to wear it.’
