Iga Swiatek, the world’s top-ranked tennis player, has withdrawn from the China Open due to personal reasons. The five-time Grand Slam champion announced her decision on Friday, adding to a string of recent withdrawals.
Swiatek previously opted out of the Canadian Open and Korea Open, citing fatigue following a demanding summer schedule. She triumphed at the French Open in June, secured a bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics, and reached the US Open quarterfinals before losing to American Jessica Pegula.
“Due to personal matters, I’m forced to withdraw from the China Open in Beijing,” Swiatek stated in a statement. “I’m very sorry as I had an amazing time playing and winning this tournament last year and was really looking forward to being back there.”
“I know that the fans will experience great tennis there and I’m sorry I won’t be a part of it this time,” she added.
The China Open is scheduled to take place from September 23rd to October 6th. Swiatek’s absence will undoubtedly be felt by fans in Beijing, who were eagerly anticipating her return after her successful run in the tournament last year.
