John Atkinson, a respected 98-year-old World War II veteran, passed away on Thursday morning while making his way to a dawn service in John Atkinson. Atkinson, who had served as a transport driver with the RAAF in the Pacific, was reportedly traveling to the Port Broughton foreshore when the unfortunate incident occurred.
According to reports, Atkinson fell from his gopher and sought assistance. However, he subsequently fell again, prompting the arrival of an ambulance. Despite the efforts of paramedics, Atkinson sadly passed away at the scene. His son, Russell Atkinson, expressed the family’s deep sorrow and spoke of Atkinson’s eagerness to participate in the service and lead the local march, as he had done countless times before. He described his father as highly independent and resilient.
Atkinson’s military career began in 1943 when he enlisted shortly after turning 18. He served as a transport driver with the RAAF in the Pacific. News of Atkinson’s passing was met with sadness by the Returned and Service League of Australia (RSL). Spokesperson Tony Harrison extended the RSL’s deepest condolences to Atkinson’s family, friends, and fellow veterans, acknowledging the immense loss to the veteran community.
