Momos, a beloved street food in India, have found a dedicated champion in Sagar Daryani, founder and CEO of the restaurant chain Wow Momo. Daryani, along with his classmate Binod Homagai, embarked on this culinary journey in 2008, starting with a simple cart in Kolkata. Despite facing initial opposition from his family, Daryani, at the age of 21, invested a mere Rs 30,000, a single table, and two part-time cooks. This modest beginning laid the foundation for a company now valued at a staggering Rs 2,000 crore.
The name ‘Wow Momo’ itself reflects their commitment to experimentation and fusion food, aiming to captivate customers with innovative flavors. From the outset, Daryani and Homagai actively sought feedback from their patrons, continuously refining their menu and approach. This dedication to customer satisfaction propelled Wow Momo’s growth, leading to the establishment of kiosks in prime locations across India, including tech parks, malls, and hypermarkets.
Today, Wow Momo boasts over 250 stores annually and aspires to reach 350. The company has raised Rs 375 crore, with the founders, promoters, and workers holding a 52 per cent stake. Wow Momo’s monthly revenue has soared to Rs 40 crore, generating an annual income of Rs 220 crore in the previous fiscal year. The company is aiming for a topline of Rs 450 crore in FY 2023.
With a remarkable 800 stores spread across 26 states, Wow Momo sells a staggering 6 lakh momos daily. The company has set an ambitious target to reach 3,000 stores by the end of next year. This exponential growth demonstrates the immense popularity of Wow Momo and its ability to transform a simple street food into a culinary phenomenon.
