Authorities in Northern Ireland have ordered the evacuation of over 400 homes in Newtownards, County Down, due to the discovery of a suspected World War II-era bomb. The device was found on Friday, prompting a major security operation that could last for more than five days.
Police have established barricades and urged drivers to avoid the area while the bomb disposal team works to safely remove the explosive. An emergency support center has been set up to accommodate residents who were forced to evacuate their homes.
North Down and Ards District Commander Superintendent Johnston McDowell emphasized the importance of prioritizing public safety, stating, “I appreciate the disruption that this has caused, however keeping people safe is paramount and we will not take any risks. I want to thank those who may be affected for their patience at this time.”
The discovery of this potential wartime relic highlights the enduring legacy of conflict in the region and the challenges that can arise from the past. The removal operation is expected to continue for several days, causing significant disruption to the community but ensuring the safety of residents.
