X Files Appeal in Hate Speech Lawsuit Against Center for Countering Digital Hate

X, owned by Elon Musk, has filed an appeal with the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, challenging the dismissal of its lawsuit against the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH). The lawsuit stemmed from CCDH’s research on hate speech on Twitter, which X acquired in 2022 for $44 billion. Musk, who has portrayed himself as a champion of free speech, claimed that CCDH’s research was deterring advertisers and costing the company substantial revenue losses. The initial case was dismissed by U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer in San Francisco on March 25, who concluded that X’s lawsuit was an attempt to silence its critics and retaliate against their speech. The outcome of the appeal, which could take several months or longer, remains uncertain.
