XG’s ‘Woke Up’ Music Video: A Fashion Breakdown

Since their explosive debut just two short years ago, Japanese girl group XG has certainly taken the music scene by storm. Short for the Xtraordinary Girls, the seven-member group—namely Jurin, Chisa, Hinata, Maya, Juria, Harvey, and Cocona—has quickly risen to the top of the charts with their unapologetic visuals and high-octane energy. A perfect mix of dance pop and hip-hop, the septet officially made its comeback late last month with ‘Woke Up’, marking the group’s fifth single and first all-rap track.

Aside from the powerful rap and dynamic energy that has earned the group its reputation, it was the striking graphics and hyper-surrealist CGI work that made this comeback stand out from all previous releases. Creatively directed by acclaimed South Korean fashion photographer Choi Gi-Seok and his crew, the music video was a melting pot of larger-than-life set design and immersive lighting, exploring themes of sci-fi futurism and dystopia.

The music video also saw each of the members don distinctive statement ensembles that played on various prominent fashion archetypes, also incorporating the use of maximalist layering and dynamic shapes. Conceptualised by stylist Lee Heejun, there were textural gowns, strong tailoring, and streetwear-inspired co-ord sets to name a few, with each outfit following a complementary color palette. The styling also proved a strong outing for designers both old and new, with already-established brands such as Marc Jacobs, Vetements, and Dion Lee peppered in with custom looks from emerging names in the likes of KOWGI, Émilie Racine, and Gerrit Jacob.

On the accessories front, many of the delicate headgear and jewelry pieces were 3-D printed or made entirely from resin, reflective of the current style zeitgeist. Below, Vogue Singapore breaks down each of the member’s looks from the music video, along with where to shop some of these pieces.
