Yale students and protestors took to the streets of New Haven on Monday, April 22, 2024, to hold a Pro-Palestinian rally. The demonstration, which blocked the intersection of College St. and Grove St. outside Woolsey Hall, came after approximately 45 students were arrested from an encampment at Beinecke Plaza earlier that morning.
The protest was organized by the Yale Students for Justice in Palestine and the New Haven Students for Justice in Palestine. The groups are calling for an end to the Israeli occupation of Palestine and for the recognition of Palestinian rights.
The rally began at Beinecke Plaza, where students had been camping out for several days. At around 10:30 am, police arrived on the scene and began to arrest the students. The arrests were met with resistance from the students, who linked arms and chanted slogans.
After the arrests, the protestors marched to the intersection of College St. and Grove St., where they blocked traffic for several hours. The protestors held signs that read “Free Palestine” and “End the Occupation.” They also chanted slogans such as “Free, free Palestine” and “End the Apartheid.”
The demonstration ended peacefully at around 4:00 pm. The students who were arrested were released later that evening.
