Yankees Designate Morris, Acquire Tonkin from Mets

The New York Yankees made a roster move on Thursday, designating right-handed pitcher Cody Morris for assignment and claiming right-hander Michael Tonkin off waivers from the New York Mets.

Morris, 27, was acquired from the Cleveland Guardians in December for outfielder Estevan Florial. He made the Yankees’ Opening Day roster but was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on April 19 after not appearing in a game. He was recalled on Tuesday but did not pitch before being designated for assignment.

Tonkin, 34, has pitched in six games this season, five with the Mets and one with the Minnesota Twins. He has a 6.00 ERA with 11 strikeouts and four walks in 9.0 innings. He has a 4.44 career ERA in 192 relief appearances over seven seasons with the Twins (2013-17, 2024), Braves (2023), and Mets (2024).

The Yankees designated Morris to make room for Tonkin on the 26-man roster. Morris will return to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and try to pitch his way back to the big leagues. He has a 1.93 ERA in four games with the RailRiders this season, one as a starter.

The Yankees and Mets will open a three-game series at Yankee Stadium on Friday night. Tonkin is expected to be available to pitch out of the bullpen for the Yankees.
