Despite last year’s 82-80 disaster and 14-year World Series drought, New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman remains highly respected among his peers in the baseball industry. According to a recent survey of 40 executives, the Yankees are ranked as the 10th-best front office in the league.
“Brian Cashman,” one executive said, “is severely underrated.”
“They don’t get enough credit for the engine they’ve built to support their spending at the major-league level,” another executive said.
The fanbase could find reasons to disagree, with Cashman facing criticism in recent seasons for playoff disappointment coupled with failed trades and signings. With the explosion of analytics across baseball, Cashman has also been criticized for relying too heavily on them.
However, the Yankees’ strong start to the 2024 season, with a 16-8 record, is a positive sign for Cashman’s job security. Ultimately, a deep postseason run will likely be the only thing that satisfies fans and cements Cashman’s legacy as one of the most successful general managers in baseball history.
