Yashasvi Jaiswal returned to form with a stylish century against the Mumbai Indians (MI) on April 22, reigniting his hopes of a spot in the T20 World Cup 2024 squad.
Jaiswal had struggled at the opening spot for the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in recent matches, but he adopted a measured approach against MI, hitting the ball through the ground rather than giving it an aerial route.
Senior MI batter and India captain Rohit Sharma was full of praise for Jaiswal’s innings, and the youngster himself credited Sharma and Virat Kohli for their support.
Speaking to the IPL website, Jaiswal said: “It’s incredible and I am enjoying it. Initially, it was tough for me but that’s how cricket is. I guess you have to go through ups and downs and learn. I want to thank all my seniors Virat bhaiya and Rohit bhaiya and especially Sanga sir and Sanju bhai, the way they have been talking to me. It’s incredible to go through these phases and still enjoy the game.”
Jaiswal’s century has put him in contention for the openers’ spot in the T20 World Cup 2024 once again. The batter looked in good touch against MI and would hope to carry forward the momentum that he gained in this innings.
However, Jaiswal will face competition from Shubman Gill for the openers’ spot. India is unlikely to take more than three openers in the T20 World Cup. If the selection committee opts for only three openers, Jaiswal may have to sit out the tournament.
